Fire Science

Fire is a natural ecosystem process in California. It helped shape California's landscapes through time both by natural and human means. Fire is something to be respected. It is a tool for land managers to create healthy landscapes that can adapt and thrive over time. It can also bring about loss and challenges to communities that live in more fire prone areas. On this page, you will find resources for fire preparedness for homeowners, agriculture, and landowners, post-fire recovery, prescribed burns, and fire science.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's (CALFIRE) mission is to protect the state of California from wildfire and to steward the California's state and privately-owned wildlands.  CALFIRE has many resources for fire preparedness for urban and rural areas.  Visit www.fire.ca.gov for more information about CALFIRE and its programs.  Visit readyforwildfire.org for guides to home hardening, defensible space, and so much more!

Fire Adapted Communities

Fire adapted communities are knowledgeable, engaged communities where action of residents and agencies in relation to infrastructure, buildings, landscaping and the surrounding ecosystem lessen the need for extensive protection actions and enable the communities to safely accept fire as part of the surrounding landscapes.  Because every community is unique, the steps and strategies they take to improve their wildfire resilience will vary from place to place.
