The Crop Science Society of America gave its Presidential Award to Cal Qualset, professor emeritus in the Department of Plant Sciences at UC Davis, for his long dedication to wheat research.
Qualset received the award on November 3 at the society's annual convention in Long Beach. Qualset was cited for his long service to CSSA, the American Society of Agronomy and the Agronomic Science Foundation. He was editor-in-chief and president of CSSA, president of the American Society of Agronomy and a founding influence for the International Crop Science Congress. He organized symposia on intellectual property rights for plants and initiated the formation of the Plant Genetic Resources Division.
He was a founding member and coordinator of the International Triticeae Mapping Initiative for 12 years. His UC Davis team developed and released 28 varieties of wheat, oat and triticale for California farmers, with much of the research conducted at UC Intermountain REC.
He has published more than 350 research papers, reviews and reports. Qualset, who retired from UC Davis in 1994, has remained active in wheat research, organized a research farm in Lithuania for a private foundation and served on numerous international boards and review panels.
