  • Attention ChickenQue Volunteers!
CQ reps who are not already approved volunteers, need to complete the process. Go to: New Leader Checklist.

“Adults must be approved 4-H volunteers to serve in any position or role where they volunteer in a sustained capacity (over days, months, or years) in the UC 4-H program. The rationale behind this include: i) ensuring the safety and well-being of 4-H youth members; ii) providing protection to the adult themselves (as they are covered under the UCs liability when acting in their volunteer capacity); iii) protecting the reputation and brand of the 4-H program and the University.

  • Regional Conference for Volunteers, Staff and Teens…WRLF

The Western Region Leaders' Forum (WRLF) is a leadership conference for volunteers and staff of the 4-H Western Region. The 13 states in the region are Alaska, Alberta, (Canada) Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Usually held in the early spring or late winter, the conference is hosted by one or two states on a rotating schedule each year. WRLF includes guest speakers, skill-building workshops, entertainment and cultural activities from the location and plenty of time for networking, connecting with 4-H friends and making new ones.

This will be the first time Western Regional Leaders' Forum (WRLF) will be held outside the United States, and we intend to show all attendees what 4-H Alberta hospitality is all about!

From across Canada and western U.S. states, adult leaders of 4-H and 4-H teen members (15+ years of age) will gather at the Shaw Conference Center in Edmonton from March 16-18th, 2017 to participate in a conference highlighting community, opportunity, and, of course, friendship. Don't miss your chance to support the future of 4-H, and be part of the conversation that will help strengthen thousands of rural communities.

The conference will packed with tours, sessions, key note speakers, entertainment, and tons of networking with 4-Hers. Educational components and large group sessions will range from project skill development, team building, personal development, communication, program management, and positive youth development. We look forward to seeing you there!

  • Antibiotic Feed Use Legislation – Veterinary Feeding Directives

4-H Animal Sciences, U.C. Davis Veterinary School, and the CDFA have been hosting webinars to teach volunteers and staff about the new FDA legislation around the use of medicated animal feed.

Under the new legislation which went into effect January 1, 2017, the use of certain antibiotics in feed and water must now take place only under that supervision of a veterinarian. Animal owners and breeders will need:

    • A Veterinary Food Directive (VFD), a prescription like document which they receive from their vet and take to the feed store in order to purchase the feed.
    • To keep a copy of the VFD in the records for two years. It is the responsibility of the 4-H member to keep these documents and present them upon inspection, if any.
    • To discontinue the use of any feed on hand.

It is highly recommended that 4-H members establish a vet/client relationship. To issue a VFD, the vet should have a personal acquaintance with the animal and be treating the animal knowledgeably.

Members are encouraged to share contact information and recommendations of vets with each other.

To view the entire presentation, and find out more, please visit the California state 4-H website, Animal Science page here: http://4h.ucanr.edu/Projects/STEM/SET_Projects/Animal/
