State 4-H Field Day this Saturday!

The State 4-H Field Day takes place annually on the last Saturday in May at the UC Davis campus from 8:00am until 6:00pm.  This event includes the State Fashion Revue and State Presentation Day.

The event is open to all 4-H members, volunteers, staff, and parents. Between 1,000 and 1,400 people attend the event. The event has a "picnic" feel as people bring chairs and socialize for the day on the Wellman Hall east lawn. The State 4-H Office provides coordination and facility support.

Each contest and activity is coordinated by a group of 4-H staff, volunteersk, and youth. During the event, 4-H members may participate in a variety of contests. Some contests require pre-qualification and/or pre-registration. Some are open to all during the event.

Visit the State 4-H Field Day site for complete information about contests and events.

News from Sectional Meeting

State Leadership Conference (SLC) chaperones will include group leaders 18-21 year olds & chaperones 25 and up. Both groups will need to fill out an application, and go to training. The group leaders will be housed with staff. There will be an adult and youth tracks.

The 4-H Future Task Force has identified two barriers:

  1. The record books are too complicated. They may be piloting several new forms during 2014-2015 to a select group to try different options.
  2. The current uniform is not easily accessible for all members. A discussion around fairs keeping the uniform requirements even if we change our uniform. New uniform ideas will be modeled at State Field day.

4-H Livestock Projects in Santa Rosa City Limits

Did you know that the code for the City of Santa Rosa limits livestock on Rural Residential zoning to properties over half an acre? Even on properties over half an acre, there are significant limits on the number of animals you can have on your property regardless of whether the project is for 4-H.  It only takes one complaint to the city for enforcement to come and require removal of animals.  This shows a lack of support for the 4-H program, a government sponsored program that supports youth in agriculture and leadership.

Come support two of your fellow members as they speak in the open forum portion of next Tuesday's City Council meeting.  Tuesday, June 3 at 4pm during the Public Comments portion of the meeting.  Anyone is allowed to speak and you are allowed 3 minutes.  Speak up to protect your property rights and to support the 4-H program.
