The University of California's Hopland Research & Extension Center currently has three guard dogs in use to protect the research flock of "western whiteface" (Targhee breed) sheep. Here is "Joey", an adult Great Pyrenees, with a small group of sheep. In addition to this guardian dog, HREC has two fairly young Anatolian Shepherds.
Past research on the Center has shown that well-working guard dogs can drop the loss of sheep to natural predators substantially ... under the right "working" conditions.
