The California Native Plant Society needs your help.

Cal native
The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) is asking for help in restoring oaks to Sonoma County. In October, at least 31,000 acres of oak forest and woodlands burned in the devastating wine country fires. These oaks support hundreds of different species of wildlife, birds, pollinators, and other animals, and are critical elements of local ecosystems. Now, CNPS and partners have launched an ambitious effort to "Re-Oak" wine country. While many oaks are naturally resilient to fire, those destroyed by bulldozing and other fire-fighting actions need our help to recover. Help CNPS at http://www.cnps.org/cnps/conservation/acorns/. Need 4-H Projects to Test New 4-H Livestock Curriculum

UC Davis is looking for 4-H projects, particularly animal science projects, to participate in the testing of a new 4-H curriculum titled At the Interface between Livestock and Predators: Reducing Depredation through Livestock Husbandry, which was developed in response to a community need identified in California. The goal of the curriculum is that youth will apply the knowledge they learn in their communities to solve authentic community needs associated with predator depredation. There are five modules in the curriculum that include: biomes, the food web, predator identification, risk assessment and mitigation tools and opportunities for service-learning and community engagement. 4-H projects would be asked to test each activity from March to May 2018. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Colette Ankenman at cankenman@ucdavis.edu.

Advisor Update January 2018 - Asking Questions
A critical component of the 4-H project leader role is drawing out young people's ideas. Asking effective questions (or prompts) will help build their understanding and promote reasoning and critical thinking.

 Presidents Letter - Naomi Edwards

Naomi Edwards
Hello Sonoma County 4-H!!

What a beautiful time in our county. The leaves have fallen off all of the grape vines and fruit trees, the hills are green again and the bulbs are already starting to bloom.

The winter and spring are full new opportunities for us to encourage new skills and challenges in the youth of our fine county. We have leadership conferences, Presentation Day, livestock judging, rabbit and poultry shows, Fashion Revue, Chickenque, and fairs.

Clubs have contests, project meetings, community service projects, and proficiencies. I know of 3 clubs that fund-raised, and provided food and gifts for firestorm victims. Clubs are visiting elder care homes playing games and leaving encouraging cards. County Youth volunteered at the Redwood Empire food bank that is supplying food for 200,000 people. Fashion Revue is joining the state in making pillowcases for kids with cancer. Our youth are changing our county, our country and our world, for the better!

Have a safe and enjoyable rest of winter as we prepare for Spring.

Warmly, Naomi

Policies and Procedures

For adults who are still pending in the 4hOnline enrollment system

4HOnline
For adults who are still pending in the 4hOnline enrollment system: Your 4-H volunteer leader application is still pending and not yet active/approved. While you have submitted your 4hOnline enrollment, you may be missing one or more steps: (1) not paid the fee to your 4-H Club Leader or Volunteer Enrollment Coordinator (or they have not let the 4-H Office know this was complete), (2) not completed the online eXtension training, or (3) not completed the livescan background check process (some returning volunteers were also required to complete this). If you have completed the above steps, it may be that your application is still being processed. While still pending and not approved/active, you are not considered a 4-H volunteer leader, and thus may not hold project meetings, act as chaperones, be active in Club or County leadership positions, are not covered by 4-H accident/sickness insurance, and are not covered by UCs liability insurance. We value your time and appreciate your willingness to volunteer to work with our young people. We would like to see you complete your 4-H application as soon as possible. This must be completed prior to February 28, 2018.

horse for community project
The Vintage Cutting Horse association, is seeking youths involved in the Horse project of the 4-H organization.

Vintage Cutting Horse Association is a non-profit organization; , who hosts 4 to 6 cutting horse competitions each year; at the Petaluma Riding and Driving Club located in Petaluma.

We need volunteers to assist during our 6 annual cutting horse competitions. Beginning May 19th, and the 3rd Saturday of each month thereafter; ending September or October.

We need volunteers to assist with running the Judge sheets and serving Lunch.  The time involved would be from 8:30am to 12:00-1:00pm.  Besides earning community service credits, it would provide educational awareness of another discipline within the horse industry.

I look forward to receiving the names and contact information for those 5 Club's project leaders, as well as getting this information posted on the 4-H blog.

Vintage Cutting Horse Association – A California Non Profit

The specific and primary purposes of the Association are to encourage the development of, and public interest in, cutting horses through promotion, presentation, and sponsorship of cutting horse competitions, educational clinics, and other events involving the use or exhibition of cutting horses in an effort to attract new participants to the sport of cutting.
