Treehopper Identification handout
Treehoppers are identified by the enlarged and elongated first thorax segment (pronotum) which projects above the head and extends back over the abdomen.

Species covered here are:

  • Threecornered alfalfa hopper 
    (Spissistilus festinus)
  • Tortistilus albidosparsus.

Key characteristics distinguishing these two species are:

  1. size
  2. where lateral ridges join.
