2012 Grape Day
Sonoma County Grape Day will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2012 in the Merlo Theater at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. This is an annual event presented by UC Cooperative Extension Viticulture Farm Advisor Rhonda Smith and sponsored by the Sonoma County Winegrape Commission. Six speakers will present updates on continuing research projects.
Dr. Wayne Wilcox, Plant Pathologist (Dept. of Plant Pathology and Plant Microbe Biology, Cornell University) and Dr. Doug Gubler, Extension Plant Pathologist (Dept. of Plant Pathology, UC Davis) will address powdery mildew and botrytis bunch rot epidemiology and control under challenging growing conditions.
Dr. Brad Hansen, Extension Weed Specialist (Dept. of Plant Sciences, UC Davis) will provide a brief overview of the following:
-Statewide trends in herbicides and emerging weed issues
-Current research on "vine killing"
-Upcoming research on vineyard and orchard grazing
Prior to Grape Day, Brad would appreciate your participation in a survey. The goal of this survey is to determine grower, applicator, and pest control advisor perceptions and experiences related to herbicide-resistant weeds in perennial cropping systems. This research is being conducted as a part of a larger project (Evolution and Management of Herbicide Resistant Weeds) which involves several UC Davis, UC Cooperative Extension, and Fresno State University faculty.
Dr. Doug Adams, Professor of Viticulture (Department of Viticulture & Enology, UC Davis) and Rhonda Smith, Viticulture Farm Advisor (UC Cooperative Extension, Sonoma County) will discuss a suspected nitrogen metabolism disorder in Pinot Noir.
Dr. Lucia Varela, North Coast IPM Advisor (UC Cooperative Extension) will discuss trapping and chemical control of European Grapevine moth in 2012.
Register here in mid-January 2012.
