State 4-H February 2013 Newsletter

President’s Corner

And so the New Year begins with a flurry of activity! February is very busy and everyone will be trying to juggle many different activities and events! I encourage parents, project leaders, resource leaders and club leaders to help at the many different events and see what a wonderful program your kids are participating in. There are always plenty of events that need volunteers and/or chaperones and I encourage you all to participate so we can continue to offer the activities and events. Without the help of our 4-H community volunteers many events would not be able to happen. It takes all of us working together to make this program so successful.

Presentation Day is coming on Feb 2nd. It is an excellent opportunity to showcase your 4-H talent and I hope to see many of you there. Can’t think of a better way to improve your confidence and speaking ability than Presentation Day!

Livestock Judging Contest is on February 9th at the Santa Rosa Jr. College Farm. We will again be hosting a statewide contest and I encourage teams to send in your entries for the contest. Entries are due by February 6 . The State qualifier for the National Judging contest is March 2nd at UC Davis.

We have new Sonoma County 4-H All Stars and everyone will get to meet them at the CCC meeting on February 5th. We have had an awesome All Star team this past year and we would like to thank them for a job well done. Come join us in February and meet your new 2013-14 All Star Team.

From the Chickenque Committee
The 52nd Annual Sonoma County 4-H Chickenque will be held on May 5, 2013. The theme this year, The Centennial of 4-H, Celebrating 100 years, 1913-2013. It's time to start thinking about your garden displays, decorated cakes and, one of the best parts of Chickenque, club and project booths. Put the theme to good work and come up with some fun displays.
It's very important that your Chickenque Rep. attend the upcoming meetings. Our January meeting was full of introductions and positive discussion. The next meeting is February 28, 7pm at the 4-H Center. We hope to have your club tickets available that evening.
We will be considerate of your time and keep the meetings to less than an hour….hopefully a lot less.
If you have any question, please feel free to contact Matt or Cheryl. See you all soon.

Hello Sonoma County 4H Families
Sequoia 4H is starting a collection of new slippers, flip flops, large duffle bags or larger than a carry on size suitcase, to be donated to the Valley of the Moon Children’s Shelter. We will collect these items each month and deliver them at the end of the 4H year to their center. Please bring your donations to the monthly CCC meeting to Kelly Hinde. The Valley of the Moon Children's Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization established to provide supportive and educational services for the abandoned, neglected and abused children of Sonoma County.
Thank you for your help in this community service project.

4-H Camp Update!
4-H Camp planning is off to a great start!
CAMP NEEDS VOLUNTEERS!: It takes many adult volunteers to make camp happen! Currently we are in need of volunteers for:
~ Camp I & II Adult Chaperones
~ Camp Nurse/EMT – we cannot have camp without one for each camp
~ Luggage Haulers! This requires someone who has a trailer, to meet the buses at the 4-H centers, load kids luggage, and deliver it to/from 4-H camp.
~Adult Chicken-Q rep: This person would organize staffing the work shifts that camp is responsible for, and organizing our camp information booth for Chicken-Q.
~ Adults to help with a maintenance day at Las Posadas, date TBD.
Please contact any one of the camp coordinators listed below if you are able to help with any of these jobs.
CAMPER APPS COMING SOON!: Keep a look out for camper applications! They will be posted on the 4-H website on March 1. Make sure to get yours turned in promptly as
camp can fill up quickly!
If you have questions about camp or the volunteer positions, please don’t hesitate to call any one of us! We are looking forward to another great 4-H camp year!

Congratulations to Ben Hampton!
Our 4-H State Ambassador, Ben Hampton, has been honored with being selected as our delegate to attend the National 4-H Conference in Washington DC. It is the Secretary of Agriculture's premier youth development opportunity to engage youth in developing recommendations for the 4-H Youth Development Program.
The National 4-H Conference is a working conference in which youth and adults develop recommendations to help guide 4-H Youth Development Programs nationally and in their communities. This event brings together youth, volunteer leaders, and state and county extension staff members from across the United States, the U.S. territories, and the Canadian provinces.
As the sponsor for this conference, the National 4-H Headquarters is charged with sharing the recommendations that emerge from the conference with the Secretary of Agriculture, national extension program leaders, and others who determine 4-H programs. At the same time, the National 4-H Headquarters ensures that the conference is a meaningful experience for youth and adult participants.

Livestock Judging Contest
The annual 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging contest will be held at the SRJC Shone Farm-Warren Dutton Pavilion on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 9 am to 4 pm. Check in will begin at 8:30. Pre-registration will again be required for the contest. We will be using our computerized program again for scoring and will want to begin data entry before the contest. Entries should be submitted to Diana Stornetta via mail or email (address information on entry form). The entries must be received no later than February 6th, 2013. Entry forms are available on the 4-H website. The National contest has added Meat Goats to the contest so our contest will feature classes of Beef, Swine, Sheep, and Meat Goats. In addition there will be 3 sets of reasons. This is an excellent opportunity to improve your judging skills to help you with project animal selection and also provide you with a positive experience to improve your public speaking skills. 4-H members may wear their 4-H uniforms or appropriate attire (blazer, slacks) for reasons. Reasons will be required to receive individual and team awards. This event is open to all 4-H clubs members in California. Individual awards will be sponsored for 4-H 9-10, 11-13, and 14 and over, as well as team awards for beef, sheep, swine, reasons and overall. FFA individual and team awards will be provided by SRJC Ag Department. A food booth will be sponsored by the SRJC Ambassadors. If you have any questions, please contact Diana Stornetta 823-7516. The Centennial of 4-H in California will be celebrated in 2013 in many ways, in traditional events and in special programs. Culminating the activities is the State 4-H Leaders' Forum, Nov. 8 - 10, 2013 in Sacramento. As part of the celebration the SLF committee is searching for the family with the most generations involved in the 4-H program. How about yours? Another search is ensuing for the oldest living 4-Her. Do you know someone who was in 4-H in the early days of 4-H - 1920s, 30s, 40s? If you have memorabilia from your 4-H experience, which you are willing to share with others, we would like to hear from you, too. There is room for several displays to document the progression of traditions, projects, hair styles, fashions, experiences, etc. Please contact Stephanie Barrett mom4a2g@yahoo.com for more information about showing memorabilia. We are taking suggestions, applications for educational workshops. Please contact Mary Engebreth maryengebreth@comcast.net
