President’s Corner

Once again, summer has flown by and it’s time to start the new year again. I am sure everyone put everything they had into the fairs this year and also I’m sure we are all tired! I hope everyone had successful shows and the kids walked away with a ton of ribbons, awards and memories. I am sure our club leaders are working hard to organize the new year and get the enrollment started. We are confident the enrollment will run much smoother this year with a better understanding of the new state enrollment system! The 4-H All Stars are ready to install your club officers so contact them to get them scheduled!

The Annual leader training will be held on September 7th from 9:00am – noon at the 4-H Center Rohnert Park so club leaders should have all the tools you need to make it a very successful year.
Our first CCC meeting is September 3rd at 7 pm at the 4-H office in Santa Rosa. It’s important that you send a club representative to each of our meetings so they can bring back the vital information regarding upcoming events and programs.

The next big event for us is the Sonoma County 4-H Foundation BBQ on September 21st. Hope all the clubs are taking advantage of their auction item fundraising opportunity! What a great way to put some money into your club treasury. Please call Susan Hansen at 584-9284 for ticket information.

Do you know a special leader or community group/business who has given above and beyond to the 4-H program? Think about nominating them for a Friend of 4-H award. There are 2 Friend of 4-H awards given every year: one for a business and one for a leader: Community business persons and/or companies that demonstrate consistent support of the 4-H program are eligible. 4-H Leaders who have been actively involved in 4-H for at least 10 years are also eligible for this award. Nominations need to be 100 words or less, describing how the nominee meets the above criteria and should be send to Karyn Pulley/Cheryl Mohrman – Co-chairs of the I &R committee. Awards will be presented at Achievement Night on September 28th.

Look forward to seeing you at the September CCC meeting.

 PROJECTS

** JOIN THE WILDLIFE PROJECT **
4-H w projects in letter

Gianna Giovannini Lovell, Wildlife Junior Leader
Did you know that if a Sea Star loses an arm, it will grow back?! Yep, it takes about a year. Did you know that a Red Sea Urchin that is found on our coast can live over 200 years?! They are among the oldest living creatures on earth! Learn more about these and other interesting coastal creatures in the Countywide Wildlife Project.
Each year, the project concentrates on a specific area of flora and fauna in Sonoma County, this year, we will learn all about the Sonoma Coast. We have monthly meetings and go on at least one field trip. Meetings are on the fourth Wednesday of the month, 4pm at the 4-H Office in Santa Rosa (133 Aviation Blvd, Suite 109). Our first meeting is September 25. Hope to see YOU there.
If you have questions about the project, contact Mary Engebreth maryengebreth@comcast.net
Be sure to check out the Wildlife Project page.

** NEW COUNTYWIDE PROJECTS **

Would You Like to Take Your Project to the Next Level?
As our new year begins we are always looking for new Countywide Projects. Are you a leader who would like to expand your club project and provide knowledge to a larger group? Are you a volunteer who would like to start up something new? In the past few years we have had a wide variety of projects start up, financial literacy, lapidary, EMS, just to name a few. Contact the county office, 565-2681 if you have an idea and we will get you started! Sonoma County 4-H has awesome volunteers!

 ** CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2013 – 2014 STATE AMBASSADOR **

4-H State Ambassador Program logo
Sonoma County 4-H is proud to announce that Jeannette Lanatti from the Golden Hills 4-H club has been selected as a California 4-H State Ambassador. This program is a working honor that provides 4-H members expanded opportunities to serve the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program. The 4-H State Ambassador position is one of the highest service opportunities and recognition attainable in the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program. 4-H State Ambassadors are youth who have excelled in the areas of leadership and community service. They are selected to serve the 4-H Youth Development Program in roles that promote leadership through education and service. Congratulations, Jeannette!

** CHICKENQUE **

The 2013 Chickenque is behind us, but the 2014 event date is quickly approaching. On May 4, 2014, we will hold the 53rd Annual Sonoma County 4-H Chickenque, an event with history, memories and a BBQ second to none.
As Matt enters his 3rd year as our Chickenque Chair, it's time for someone new to shadow him. Matt has brought some great, new ideas to this magical event and he would like to share this year with a Co-Chair, someone interested in leading us into the future. As Chickenque Chair, you will have one year learning, one year leading and one year transitioning out. You won't be alone, as we are sticking around, but the time has come for many of us to take on new roles or responsibilities.
We are looking for new chairs and/or co-chairs in the following areas:

  • Gophers, extra napkins and table cleaning
  • Serving line
  • Soda Booth
  • Promotion and Advertising
  • Grants and donations
  • Cake Judging Contest
  • Cake Eating Contest
  • Set up and Take down

We would like to thank all the Sonoma County 4-H families for making this event possible. It takes some 500 volunteers, working together in various areas, to BBQ 5,000 halves of chicken and create a welcoming, family environment.
At the September CCC meeting we will share all the financial numbers with you. We hope you have enjoyed your summer. Just a reminder that our Chickenque Rep. meetings will be on the 4th Thursday of the month beginning in January - April.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.

** FROM: MATTHEW SCHAFER, CHICKENQUE CHAIR **

To: 4-H Membership
I want to thank everyone for coming together to help make all the changes we have made to the Chickenque so Successful! In two years we have:

1. Moved to an on-line volunteer sign up
2. added cake eating and baking contest
3. Implemented a single sign in area for all volunteers
4. Reworked the grills and food handling process
5. Consolidated meal assembly from 3 areas to 1

These are just a few of the changes you have helped implement. Our Chickenque is the show case of what Sonoma county 4-H is all about. It allows the public and potential new members to see what we do as well as help bring our 4-H community together.
It has been a pleasure to work with such a great group of Committee members and help guide the evolution of this historic event. I take great pride in my involvement in this event and I believe to keep it fresh and alive we need to have an ever evolving leadership. To this end I will be stepping down as chairman at the end of the 2014 event. It is my hope that a new chair will step up so that they can learn the ropes from me. I would like to see the chairman position follow a 3 year structure of:

1. Up and coming chairman
2. Chairman
3. Past Chairman

This structure will ensure we have fresh, well-supported leadership. We have reworked the committee positions to better reflect the workloads of the event so that no one person, including the chair is overwhelmed.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about being part of the leadership of this event
Making the best better!!
~Matthew Schafer
