President's Corner

And so the New Year begins with the normal flurry of events! February is very busy and everyone will be trying to juggle many different activities and events! I encourage parents, project leaders, resource leaders and club leaders to help at the many different events and see what a wonderful program your kids are participating in. There are always plenty of events that need volunteers and/or chaperones and I encourage you all to participate so we can continue to offer the many wonderful activities 4-H has to offer. Without the help of our 4-H community volunteers many events would not be able to occur. It takes all of us working together as a team to make this program so successful and offer our members the greatest opportunities of success.

Presentation Day is coming on Feb 7th. I can’t begin to tell you how important this event is!  Everything you will do in your life will revolve around communication and what better way to learn than through a Presentation. Kelly Hinde has put together another outstanding Presentation Day and I encourage everyone to participate. If you can’t participate, visit the event and sit in on a couple of presentations or a “Share The Fun” skit!  A great way to spend the morning. It is an excellent opportunity to showcase your 4-H talent and I hope to see many of you there.

Our Livestock Judging Contest is on February 28th at the Santa Rosa Jr. College Farm. We will again be hosting a statewide contest and I encourage teams to send in your entries for the contest.  Entries are due by February 20th. The State qualifier for the National Judging contest is March 7th at UC Davis.

Cloverdale Citrus Fair takes place 13th -17th and will have many opportunities for our 4-H members! Please check the fair entry book for all the different ways you can showcase your projects.

All Star Selection will be coming later in the spring so encourage your members who are All Star age to apply! We have had a wonderful All Star – Emily Eakins and her amazing Rising Star team! The Rising Star team is a great way to test the waters and find out if you want to be an All Star. We look forward to a new exciting team of All Stars/Rising Stars for 2015-16. Stay tuned for more information and dates!

It is also time to start thinking about becoming a member of the Executive Board. We have several positions that will be up for election in May and I encourage all of you to talk to the existing officers and find out about the positions and the time commitments. I have been fortunate to be on the board for a number of years and am very proud of the hard work these dedicated leaders put into the 4-H program. I am very proud to be part of this group. Please think about joining the team to help keep the Sonoma County 4-H program strong and thriving!

From the ChickenQue Committee

We are busily planning for the big event on May 3! Promoting the event is our top priority. Please share your love for 4-H while selling tickets to the public, encourage them to attend and learn about the leadership opportunities available. Visit the ChickenQue Page and learn more about this great event!

The CQ T-shirt winner has been chosen, please watch for the official announcement and the order form.

The next Chickeque Rep meeting is February 26, 7pm at the 4-H Center. We will be distributing CQ tickets to the clubs.

The committee is now taking entries for the poster contest, we encourage all members to participate and create unique posters that spread the word about our event.

Poster Contest Information

Fair Appreciation Day is March 1. This is our way of thanking the Sonoma County Fairgrounds for allowing us to hold the Chickenque at their facility for free.  We are the only non-profit they do this for.

If you have any questions or great ideas, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Livestock Judging Contest

The Annual 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging contest will be held at the SRJC Shone Farm-Warren Dutton Pavilion on Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 9 am to 4 pm. Check in will begin at 8:30.

Pre-registration will be required for the contest. We will be using our computerized program for scoring and will begin data entry before the contest. Entries should be submitted to Diana Stornetta via mail or email (address information on entry form).  Entries must be received no later than February 20th, 2015. Entry forms are available on the 4-H website.

The National contest has added Meat Goats to the contest. Our contest will also feature Meat Goats in addition to our traditional classes of Beef, Swine and Sheep. In addition there will be 3 sets of reasons. This is an excellent opportunity to improve your judging skills to help you with project animal selection and also provide you with a positive experience to improve your public speaking skills.

4-H members may wear their 4-H uniforms or appropriate attire (blazer, slacks) for reasons. Reasons will be required to receive individual and team awards. This event is open to all 4-H clubs members in California. Individual awards will be sponsored for 4-H, 8 and under, 9-10, 11-13, and 14 and over, as well as team awards for beef, sheep, swine, reasons and overall.
