March 2013 State 4-H Newsletter

President’s Corner

Wow – how the days are just flying by with all these activities and events! We are so fortunate to have such a great group of volunteers to help organize and run the events that are so beneficial to the youth in our program. HUGE thank you for all of your enthusiasm and hard work! Special thanks to Kelly Hinde for another outstanding Presentation Day – lots of winners to represent us at the next level!
We had a great Livestock Judging Contest on February 9th at the Santa Rosa Jr. College Farm. Congratulations to all of our winners.
ChickenQue tickets will be coming out in March! Time to start selling tickets and help build our funds to continue the many wonderful events!
Congratulations Meagan Groverman on your outstanding Tshirt design! Don’t forget to order your special Chickenque T-shirts - ordering time is limited! ChickenQue Poster contest reminder–everyone should be holding their club contests in March and make sure the winners get to Council meeting in April! Lots of changes for ChickenQue and we hope it’s the best one ever!
I know every year seems to be filled with so many changes but with the ever shrinking State budget our program is being forced to work more efficiently with a whole lot less manpower. I appreciate everyone’s patience, understanding and support as we work our way through the many changes and I am sure we are all working toward the same goal – the best program we can provide for the best 4-H kids anywhere!
Congratulations to our 2013-14 Sonoma County All Stars – Gianna Pendleton, Holly LeGallee, Erica Larsen, Jennifer Gamba and William Hamilton! What an exciting year they have ahead of them!
Keep your activities and events on your calendar so you can update your online record book updated. If you have questions, Kelly Hinde is our resident expert and will be happy to answer questions!

Please welcome the new all star team for 2013-2014. Members include William Hamilton of Green Valley 4-H club, Erica Larson from Sonoma Valley, Gianna Pendleton from Gold Ridge, Holly LeGallee from Warm Springs, and Jennifer Gamba from Live Oak. They have just been selected and have already been out in the community representing 4-H, at the Farm Bureau Crab Feed. You will see these new all stars each month at CCC meetings.
They are more than willing and able to come to your club to present a leadership activity, install your club officers, or help out in another manner. If you wish to invite them to your club, please contact Karyn Pulley at kdpmick@aol.com or Cheryl Mohrman at mohrmanjr@aol.com .

I and R

Please check with your club leaders for the handout of new updates from I/R. Please note, the CCC scholarship is currently on the county website, as is the copy of the handout. There are many opportunities for youth and adults to participate, don't let them pass you by. A quick note about thank you notes............please make sure your club youth and adults as necessary write the notes. We recently heard from sponsors that they are not receiving thank you notes, and they had to admit how disappointed it was not to receive them. So, encourage your club youth to write those notes as needed, as it is greatly appreciated.

Why not save yourself some money with no shipping costs, and get those green hats from the 4-H office. Before you know it, it will be show season, and the hats will be needed. Hats are $12, and available at the 4-H office or you can email Karyn Pulley @ kdpmick@aol.com and she will bring them to the next CCC meeting, and your club leader can bring funds to purchase them and bring them back to the club.

From the Chickenque Committee....

The next Chickenque Rep. meeting is March 28, 7pm at the 4-H Center. We continue to plan for our May 5th event and will have useful information for you.
Congratulations to Megan Groverman of Liberty 4-H. She was our t-shirt drawing winner this year.
Please remember that all t-shirt orders are due at the March 28th meeting. We are encouraging preorders, only. We may have a few extras for the day of, but there are not guarantees.
The Chickenque posters will be judged at the April 2, CCC Meeting. Again, it's vital to promote the CQ as much as we possibly can. We are asking that the posters that don't come to county for judging, be placed in the community as advertisement.
All of the flyers are on the 4-H ChickenQue website. If you have any questions, please contact Matt or Cheryl.
Thanks for supporting Sonoma County 4-H and the 52nd Annual Chickenque!

4-H Camp Coordinators Update!

This Year’s camp dates are:
Camp I – Monday, July 1 to Sat July 6, 2013
Camp II – Sunday, July 7 to Friday, July 12, 2013
Staffers go to Camp one day earlier for each week
CAMP STILL NEEDS VOLUNTEERS!: It takes many adult volunteers to make camp happen!
Currently we are in need of volunteers for:

  • Camp I & II Adult Chaperones PLEASE!!! (Without enough we will have to turn away campers!)
  • Our chaperones need to have a background screening, and be certified in First Aid and CPR. Additionally, anyone helping with food preparation or food service must be food safety certified. All of these certifications can be easily obtained online in an hour or so, but the entire process does take time. So PLEASE! Consider signing up to be a chaperone as soon as possible!
  • Luggage Haulers! This requires someone who has a trailer, to meet the buses at the 4-H centers, load kids luggage, and deliver it to/from 4-H camp.
  • Adult Chicken-Q rep: This person would organize staffing the work shifts that camp is responsible for, and organizing our camp information booth for Chicken-Q.
  • Adults to help with a maintenance day at Las Posadas, date TBD.

Please contact any one of the camp coordinators listed below if you are able to help with any of these jobs.
Make sure to get yours turned in promptly as camp can fill up quickly!
STAFFER JOBS: This year’s teen staff is hard at work , planning another fun year at 4-H camp! The teens learned their camp staff positions at our February meeting, and they will be working hard over the next four months to get everything organized. They are very excited, and motivated to make the camp experience, the very best that it can be!
If you have questions about camp or the volunteer positions, please don’t hesitate to contact any one of us! We are looking forward to another great 4-H camp year!

Please volunteer and support our youth as they move onto this next level of competition.
Sonoma County will be supporting the event by handling check-in and we need four volunteers (adults or older teens) to help with this responsibility. In 2014 our county will be responsible for putting on Sectional Presentation Day. If you are interested in being on this committee please contact Diana Stornetta.
